What Identifies False Teachers?

Post  BibleBulldog on 06/07/11, 08:52 am

Dear friends,

This list of the identifying traits of false teachers comes directly from the New Testament. I have highlighted some which may cause an "aha" moment for some of us here but no further explanation is needed; God's Word is quite capable of speaking for itself.

- They look as though they are sheep, but inwardly are wolves: Matthew 7:15
- They are recognized by their fruit: Matthew 7:16
- They deceive people by false prophecy: Matthew 24:11
- They are capable of performing great miracles and signs: Matthew 24:24 / Mark 13:22
- They are spoken well of by people (i.e.; respected and of good repute): Luke 6:26
- They oppose true ministers of the gospel: Acts 13:6-8
- They commend themselves (i.e.; tell you how great they are): 2Corinthians 10:12-13
- They preach a different Jesus, impart a different spirit and promulgate a false gospel: 2Corinthians 11:4
- They claim to be superior to the original apostles: 2Corinthians 11:5 and 2Corinthians 12:11
- They desire to be considered apostles but are false: 2Corinthians 11:12-13
- They look like apostles of Christ and servants of righteousness: 2Corinthians 11:13 and 15
- They endanger true ministers of the gospel: 2Corinthians 11:26
- They want to enslave people (i.e.; to control and exploit): Galatians 2:4
- They preach the gospel insincerely for selfish ambition: Philippians 1:17
- They study myths and promote controversy: 1Timothy 1:4
- They promulgate false teachings: 1Timothy 4:1-2
- Their consciences are seared: 1Timothy 4:2
- They forbid people to marry (i.e.; control peoples’ relationships): 1Timothy 4:3
- They order people not to eat certain things (i.e.; preach that certain foods are bad): 1Timothy 4:3
- They are conceited and lack understanding: 1Timothy 6:3-4
- They think that godliness is a means to financial gain: 1Timothy 6:5
- They preach what people think they want to hear: 2Timothy 4:3-4
- They teach wrong things for dishonest gain: Titus 1:10-11
- They are greedy for money: 1Peter 5:2
- They lord it over those who are entrusted to them (i.e.; dominate and control their flock): 1Peter 5:3
- They secretly introduce destructive heresies: 2Peter 2:1
- They will have many followers: 2Peter 2:2
- They exploit people with fabricated stories: 2Peter 2:3
- They do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh: 2John 1:7

With kind regards, BB
